Total Joint Replacement (Outpatient)
Orthopaedic Associates of Manhasset physicians have been pioneers in outpatient total joint replacement at East Hills Ambulatory Surgery Center in Roslyn, New York. Drs. Seideman and Cassidy are regularly performing total hip and knee replacements at the center. Drs. Angel and Greenberg as well are regularly performing total shoulder replacements at the center.
If you require a joint replacement – whether of the hip, knee, or shoulder – you may be eligible for the surgery to be done on an outpatient basis. No more costly overnight hospital stays or extended recovery periods. The center offers a modern facility in which patients have their surgery performed, are cared for by Saint Francis Hospital based anesthesiologists, and receive nursing care as well as physical therapy in preparation for home discharge. You can recover in the comfort of your home beginning on the day of surgery. Initial postoperative physical therapy and visiting nurse care will occur in your home,
Whether or not you are an appropriate candidate for one of these outpatient procedures will depend on a number of factors, including your overall health, age, and if you have family members or similar individuals at home who will be there to assist you during your recovery.
Hip Replacement
Hip replacement can be performed outpatient in an appropriate patient with great success. No individual surgical approach has been demonstrated to provide a more rapid or successful result. The decision for the type of approach used should be discussed with your surgeon. Patients make a rapid recovery with outpatient total hip replacement and the procedure has demonstrated great success.
Knee Replacement
Outpatient total and partial knee replacement can be performed with the avoidance of an overnight hospital stay. Patients recover in their homes with the assistance of in home physical therapy and visiting nurses. Patients generally switch after about two weeks of in-home physical therapy to an additional month of outpatient therapy at a therapist’s office.
Shoulder Replacement
Same-day shoulder replacement surgery is a possibility, thanks to advances in surgical and anesthesia techniques. If you feel a grinding sensation in your shoulder, or hear a popping sound, you may need a shoulder replacement. Because the shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint (like your hip), a replacement typically involves replacing the “ball” atop your upper arm as well as the “socket” in your shoulder blade. In cases where the rotator cuff muscles are damaged beyond repair, you may need what is called a reverse shoulder replacement – in which the ball and socket positions are reversed, so your arm can be powered by the deltoid muscles instead of the rotator cuff.
