Get to know Dr. Brian Capogna and learn what drives his personal approach in caring for patients. Dr. Capogna is a Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon with a fellowship in Sports Medicine. He sees patients in the OAM offices in Great Neck and Commack.
What is your own practice philosophy?
My practice philosophy centers around the patient. Whenever someone comes to me for their care, it is my goal is to have each patient leave the office with a full understanding their condition, what caused it, what the various treatment options are- and to have answered all their questions. I believe it is the goal of any orthopedic surgeon to fully explain all the possible treatment options and then develop a “patient specific” plan in partnership with the patient. Typically, I will begin with non-surgical treatments. I pride myself on getting athletes healed and back on the field without surgery. However, when surgery is needed to treat an injury, I walk them through every step of the process from the surgery through every phase of the recovery. It is my philosophy that the surgeon should be there for you every step of the way!
What made you choose to become a sports medicine specialist?
Sports Medicine is a field that affords me the opportunity to work with people from all walks of life from young athletes to older patients with arthritis. It has been my pleasure to take care of patients from professional and Division 1 levels to local Long Island weekend warriors. The amazing patients I work with and the outcomes we achieve getting people “back in the game” functioning to their maximum potential are what inspired me to pursue a sports medicine specialization.
What trends in your specialty area do you see emerging?
In my field we are very interested in the long-term potential of biologic and regenerative medicine for the treatment of several orthopedic conditions. Biologic medicine includes injections such as platelet rich plasma (PRP) and bone marrow concentrate (BMC/stem cell). We are increasing our scientific understanding of the vast potential of these interventions to treat multiple orthopedic conditions including osteoarthritis, tendonitis, and tendon and ligament tears throughout the body. I think that with further scientific study, we will see an increased use of these biologics in the future treatment of these conditions
How do you stay current in your field?
I am an active member of several orthopedic societies including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). I attend both annual conferences and participate in lectures on various advancements in our field. In addition to reading the current literature through research journals, I also participate in orthopedic “grand round” conferences through St. Francis Hospital where we discuss complex cases and new surgical advancements and treatments. I also participate in national educational courses focused on the latest surgical technology in the field of sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery.
Outside of work, what are your personal interests?
Outside of work I love to spend time with my wife and my dog Archer. We love to travel, cook, take Archer on long walks, and spend time with our families. We enjoy tapas restaurants and wine tastings at our favorite local spots. We are currently expecting our first child (a girl!!), so I am excited to begin my journey as a father. I love hockey and am a die-hard New York Islanders fan. Let’s Go Islanders!!!
