Platelet Rich Plasma – Regenerative medicine that’s growing in popularity

October 4, 2021

Does your own blood hold the key to healing your medical condition?

The evolving field of regenerative medicine uses biomedical materials, often from your own body, to regenerate cells and rebuild diseased and damaged tissues to treat pain and cure complex, often chronic conditions of the musculoskeletal system.

Interventional physiatrist Amir Annabi, MD specializes in non-operative treatments of musculoskeletal injuries. He has a particular interest in PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) and the use of ultrasound guidance to target the medication into precise areas of tissue damage.  Therapeutic injections like PRP, has been shown to be safe and very effective in certain patients.  The treatment is now commonly used among elite athletes and with many others seeking non-operative solutions to pain and loss of mobility.

PRP uses the patient’s own blood platelets to promote healing and helps the body optimize on its own natural processes. The patient’s blood is drawn and then placed in a centrifuge machine which separates the blood, leaving the platelet rich plasma ready to be used for treatment. The doctor injects the PRP directly into the area of damage using the guidance of ultrasound. Most people benefit from one injection however, depending on the severity of the damage, up to three treatments may be needed.

PRP therapy can help heal injuries including tendon/ligament injuries Achilles Tendonitis, tennis elbow, cartilage loss, arthritis, and small tears such as rotator cuff tears and meniscal injuries.

Ask your doctor if PRP may be an effective solution for you.
